An ‘unintentional’ deadly start to 2020

Tragically the US has been struck with a deadly start to the year as gunfire erupts across the country.

A total of 273 devastatingly unintentional shootings have been recorded in January and February according to the Gun Violence Archives.

In the United States, over 1.69 million children age 18 and under are living in households with loaded and unlocked firearms, setting the scene for possible tragedy.

In Chicago last weekend 25 people were shot, 11 of them minors and many of them were accidental. The weekend began with a 7-year-old girl reportedly shooting her 11-year-old brother unintentionally. Following this devastating incident, on Saturday a juvenile was playing with a gun in his South Side home when he accidentally shot two relatives.

Every year, hundreds of American children gain access to firearms and unintentionally shoot themselves or someone else. If children aren’t correctly taught about the dangers surrounding firearms, accidents, as we’ve demonstrated, will happen.

There are many precautions that will help to lower the likelihood of a gun-related accidents such as, locking all firearms away in a secure place and firearm safety training for occupants of households with guns.

Alongside these measures, every household in possession of a firearm should be equipped to deal with an unpredicted shooting to prevent the loss of life.
