President Biden calls for tougher gun laws as 4 people lose their lives at a 16th birthday party

A terrible mass shooting has occurred at a very unexpected situation: a 16th birthday party in the small rural city of Dadeville, Alabama. The city is not used to these violent scenes on this level, with a population of around 3,200 people. However, it seems that mass shootings are continuously on the rise and nowhere is being deemed as safe. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been at least 160 mass shootings across the US so far this year, with 648 in total in 2022. Shockingly, these figures have doubled from 2018, a very short space of time.

The shooting took place at Mahogany Masterpiece Dance Studio in the city of Dadeville on Saturday, which was hosting a 16th birthday party. According to the BBC, Keenan Cooper who was the DJ at the birthday party told reporters he tried to help get guests under tables when it started, but it was too dark to see where and who the shots were coming from. 

The horrific scene left 4 people killed and at least 28 injured, some critically. Authorities have yet to release details on a suspect or possible motive, and the sergeant has also encouraged anyone with information about the incident to reach out to inform law enforcement. 

Since the incident, President Joe Biden renewed his calls for tougher gun laws

"What has our nation come to when children cannot attend a birthday party without fear?" Mr Biden asked, in a statement released by the White House on Sunday. - BBC

Along with President Biden, Alabama's state governor Kay Ivey said on Sunday Morning: "This morning, I grieve with the people of Dadeville and my fellow Alabamians. "Violent crime has no place in our state, and we are staying closely updated by law enforcement as details emerge," the governor added in a statement on Twitter. 

In his own statement, Mr Biden said the nation was "once again grieving". He said the American people wanted lawmakers to act on "common sense gun safety reforms". - BBC
